1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing design and uncomfortable, January 24, 2012

(REAL NAME)
I'm comparing this Converse Velocity boot to the Rothco Tan 8" Forced Entry "Deployment" - 5358, and although it is nearly twice the price it has a number of design flaws. Not to say the Rothco boot is perfect, as the inside heel area wore out on both boots after 3 months of moderate daily wear, but they are one of the least expensive side zip boots in their class.

Side Zip:

First, the Converse zip runs straight down the ankle rather than curving along the boot towards the arch like other boots. It is also backed by a full-height fabric gusset. The result is that the boot MUST be unlaced to get it on and off. So why have the zip at all if you have to lace the boot up, as it just adds a potential point of failure?

Second, the zip is so short and vertical that even if you cut the fabric gusset, it can still be a struggle to get your foot into the boot when laced reasonably tight. And if not laced tight you lose the ankle support -- which is why I... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst Boots I have ever owned, May 24, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
These boots are the worst ones that I have ever had in my 22 years in the military. They wore out in just one month. I take a car to work and work in an office. I don't do any marching or anything to make the boots wear down like this. Also, the eyelets are braking away from the leather. I will never order these kind of boots again

3.0 out of 5 stars OK, but in need of a revision, May 18, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
I purchased these boots as an alternative to the C8874's I've been using for the past few years. These boots seem to have a better sole when it comes to concrete and asphalt work, and they are also lighter and feel even more like a tennis shoe. They are also easier to clean than the above mentioned boots as mud/asphalt doesn't stick like it did in the half moon tread. However, this tread is a bit dangerous when going from a wet outdoors to a painted warehouse floor. I haven't (luckily) been able to compare the tread on ice and snow, but the C8874's were ok in that regard and I'm guessing these won't be. Also, the side zip... It's completely useless until you cut the adjoining web out. After a few weeks of cutting down ravelling threads these boots are comfortable and no longer require re-tying everytime you use them.

With some minor tweaks these could be fantastic work boots, as they are now with a little modification they are merely good.

*EDIT* After extended... Read more
